STANDARD NAME

SENTANG

(Light Hardwood)

FAMILY

Meliaceae

BOTANICAL NAME

Azadirachta excelsa

DISTRIBUTION

Found mainly in lowland forests and hills.

GENERAL DESCRIPTION

Sapwood is moderately well-defined from the heartwood, which is reddish brown.

Grain is interlocked.

Texture is slightly coarse and uneven, due to a tendency towards a ring-porous structure.

Growth rings are present and conspicuous due to the tendency for a ring-porous arrangement of the vessels, though this is not invariably present.

Vessels are moderately large in the early wood zone and medium-sized outside, moderately few, mostly solitary in the early wood zone, solitary and in radial groups of two to three outside, open or with dark-coloured gummy deposits.

Wood parenchyma is scarce; apotracheal in terminal bands and paratracheal as narrow vasicentric borders to the vessels.

Rays are moderately fine to medium-sized.

USES

Used for joinery, furniture, interior finishing, panelling, partitioning, sliced veneer, flooring, fancy articles and turnery.
